Memorial Day is usually associated with a three-day weekend and the unofficial start to summer because it falls on the last Monday of May every year. However, we can’t forget what the true purpose of Memorial Day is about, which is to remember the U.S. military men and women who have died in the line of service. Many people spend the day putting flowers or small flags on graves, lending a hand to living veterans, and attending parades to honor our nation’s fallen heroes. If you are wondering what you can do as an individual to pay your respects, here a few more ideas to add meaning to your Memorial Day on May 27.
Fly the U.S. Flag Some people uphold the tradition of displaying an American flag in their front yard or on their house to honor soldiers. It reminds everyone of the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms. On Memorial Day, American flags are to be flown at half-staff until noon. After that, you may raise the flag back to the top of the pole. At day’s end, you may lower the flag slowly before removing it from the pole. As always, the flag should never touch the ground. Give a Gift of Remembrance Sometimes words can’t express your sympathy and support as well as flowers or memorial gifts can. If you are close to the family of a fallen soldier, it would be appropriate to give them a gift as a symbol of remembrance, comfort, peace, and healing. A few thoughtful gift ideas include a memory box, an angel ornament, or a comfort plaque. No matter what you choose, sympathy gifts just need to come from the heart. You can also purchase those red paper poppies that are sold by VFW members around Memorial Day. The red poppy is a widely recognized symbol to memorialize passed soldiers. Make New Memories Honor a person who has passed by reminiscing about them and participating in activities they enjoyed. In doing so, you create new memories in the process. The nature of the day doesn’t have to be entirely somber even if it does serve a solemn purpose.Host an afternoon gathering at your home to share a meal, tell stories of the good times spent together, and enjoy the company of friends and family over the Memorial Day weekend. Never Forget More than a million American men and women have given their lives in service to their country. This Memorial Day, honor those who are no longer here and remember and learn from their examples of courage. The National Moment of Remembrance is at 3 p.m., so wherever you are at during that time, take a moment to pause and reflect on the sacrifices soldiers have made to provide freedom for us all. A best friend can be defined in many ways. They’re someone close to you who you can always count on. A best friend is someone with whom you have a lot of fun. Best friends are trustworthy and genuine and accept you for who you are—life just wouldn’t be the same without them.
To celebrate the best friends in your life, be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, June 8—National Best Friends Day. It’s a day to honor the ways best friends enrich our lives and make us better people. To honor and celebrate your friendship, here are a handful of thoughtful best friend gifts for you to consider. Decorative Books Since the early 20th century of Golden Age book design, beautiful books have long been collected as decorative objects for the home. You can add a special twist on this idea as a gift for your best friend. Have you seen those lovely faux books that look exactly like a book from the outside, but when opened can be used as a special place to store keepsakes and photos? One would make a memorable gift that’s also a functional place for your friend to put mementos of your friendship such as concert tickets and letters. Special Occasions Planner A purse-sized planner to write down important dates of each month—like National Best Friends Day—is a great little gift for your favorite friends. Many of us still like to put pen to paper for written reminders, special events, and important appointments. If you are thankful every day for your best friends, give them a special planner that they’ll love and use. Angel Sculptures If you’ve never given figurative sculptures as gifts to friends before, National Best Friends Day would be a great time to do so because many sculptural figures are collectible pieces of art that depict how much someone means to you. If you have a best friend that is a particular angel to you, she will enjoy receiving an angel figure like those found on Willow Tree® by artist Susan Lordi. The delicate wire wings on Lordi’s hand-painted angel resin figures are truly special. Friendship Plaques Remember the “best friends” necklaces that were so popular when you were young? Each of you proudly wore half of the heart around your neck. For National Best Friends Day, consider another token instead in the form of a “friendship plaque.” A hand-painted plaque depicting two friends bonding makes a sweet gift for your best friend. You can find artful plaques that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a stand. You can say it to her through words, and you can show her through a gift as well. Finding her a distinctive gift—something special to warm her heart—is a thoughtful way to show her what a great mom she is. To help you come up with ways to express your love, here are a few gift ideas for celebrating mom on May 12.
A Memory Box Full of Keepsakes If your mom doesn’t have a distinctive, special memory box, she probably would love to receive one. It’s a specific place for her to store sentimental items that she wants to keep but not necessarily display. With a memory box, she could safely store items she doesn’t want to lose or throw away, items like tickets to special events, photos, jewelry, cards from special occasions, letters, and other important mementos. A finely crafted wooden box with a carving on the front is a beautiful celebration of the relationship between mother and daughter. A Musical Figure Fill the room with the sound of delicate and soft music. A hand-painted musical figure that turns gracefully to the sound of music playing is a special gift for mom that she’d certainly appreciate. Musical figures make meaningful gifts for Mother’s Day or on a special day to recognize godparents or commemorate a baptism. Consider gifting one to your mother and perhaps even using another as a thoughtful sister gifts option so you all think of each other when you pass yours by or enjoy its sweet music. A Hand-Carved Sculpture Give a gift that truly speaks to your mother with a figurative sculpture that focuses on gestures and form, a piece that both the giver and receiver understand. Willow Tree® figurines by artist Susan Lordi are perfect expressions of love and the special relationships we share. Her mother and child figures, for instance, serve as important reminders of milestones in every mom’s life. There’s sure to be a piece that speaks to you personally among Lordi’s intimate line of hand-painted sculptures. Your mom will treasure Lordi’s sculptural artwork forever. A Spiritual Ornament Truly memorable ornaments make perfect gifts to celebrate all sorts of special occasions and life milestones. When hung on a tree, an angel ornament in prayer can be a metaphor for peace, beauty, and love. Or, it can symbolize anything inspirational in your mother’s life and adorn a space on the wall year-round. Choose a figurative ornament that you’re sure will hold meaning for both of you, maybe one with a heartfelt message written on the back as well. She will always be reminded of Mother’s Day when she looks at her ornament from you.
